This is what Mark Twain said, in 1905, when someone (a librarian in NY) objected to Huckleberry Finn:

“I am greatly troubled by what you say. I wrote Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn for adults exclusively & it always distressed me when I find boys and girls have been allowed access to them. The mind that is soiled in youth can never again be washed clean. I know this by my own experience, & to this day I cherish an unappeased bitterness against the guardians of my young life, who not only permitted but compelled me to read an unexpurgated Bible before I was 15 years old. None can do that and draw a clean sweet breath on this side of the grave. Ask that young lady–she will tell you so.

Most honestly do I wish I could say a softening word or two in defence of Huck’s character, since you wish it, but really in my opinion it is no better than God’s (in Ahab & 97 others) & the rest of the sacred brotherhood.

If there is an Unexpurgated (Bible) in the Children’s Department, won’t you please help that young woman remove Tom & Huck from that questionable companionship.”

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

– Matthew 6:5-6

I’m not really a religious person. But I think this needs to go on a billboard somewhere along I40 right in the middle of the Bible belt. Or next to one of those Mega-churches. Of course, this might be a bit too subtle for the target audience.

The US Supreme Court didn’t have its own building until 1935. So Moses, and the Ten Commandments being in/on the building? A product of the 1930′s. Certainly not a reflection of the founding of the country like some fanatics claim. And Moses isn’t exactly by himself. He shares the friezes with other ancient lawgivers. One of whom happens to be Mohammed. Oops.

All those courts around the US with copies of the Ten Commandments on display? You can thank Cecile B. DeMille for that one. It was a promotional gimmick for his movie with Charlton Heston. (Okay, some might be from other sources but that isn’t the point.)
